Why limit yourself to drawing pictures when it’s so much fun to make noise, too? Here are links to some recordings I’ve made over the years.

  • The Far Field - 2014

This is a collection of pieces for electronic guitar. Most were improvised after having done a lot of experiments with the tape and digital effects that were available to me as a studio engineer in the late 80s-early 90s, when these recordings were made.

  • Watching the Distance - 2014

Music for a variety of instruments, found objects, vocal sounds, mic effects and electronics. You'll hear kitchen bowl percussion, slide guitar, nine banjos at once, and sounds transmogrified through cheap samplers and effects, among other things.

  • Sleeping Bear August - 2016

Ambient electronic pieces inspired by the towering sand bluffs of the Sleeping Bear Dunes and the ever-changing light on Lake Michigan on long summer days and nights.

  • Dubious Authenticity - 2017

Traditional and original solo instrumental tunes for banjo, ukulele and guitar.

  • I Killed Some Time - 2018

A wide-ranging album featuring songs, poems and instrumentals using all sorts of electric and acoustic instruments.

  • Delta Drone - 2019

An album in which I imagine my late Uncle Hassell, a Louisiana cotton farmer, as a secret composer of early electronic music. This one made critic Ted Gioia’s “Best 100 Albums of 2019” list. I’m not even joking: http://tedgioia.com/bestalbumsof2019.html

  • The Beast with Five Strings - 2020

More solo instrumental tunes for steel-string banjos, nylon-string gourd banjos and five-string ukulele, with a smattering of percussion and keyboards.

  • Unexplored Corridors - 2020

Put an electric autoharp together with a few effects pedals and computer processing, and what do you get? Not "Wildwood Flower", that's for sure. This collection of abstract improvisations puts the instrument in a whole new context.

  • However Measured or Far Away - 2020

Deep ambient and experimental tracks from the fictitious persona of Paramhansa Bob Smith, founder of the spiritual practice known as Serious Goofing Off (TM).

  • Anomalous Luminous Phenomena - 2021

More voyages into the sonic unknown by P-Bob Smith, this time incorporating group vocals, percussion and field recordings in addition to his meditative organ and synthesizer drones.

  • Rural Electrification - 2021

Uncle Hassell returns with more ambient soundscapes evocative of the slow pace and long vistas of the agricultural flatlands of northeast Louisiana. Fix yourself a mint julep, sit back on your front porch, put that damn phone away, and drift off with the sonic imaginings of America's favorite cotton farmer / businessman / former mayor of Mer Rouge, Louisiana / electronic music pioneer.
